The Necessity of Skeletal Systems in Animals and Humans

• The skeletal system provides support to humans and animals.
• Humans and animals need skeletal systems to move from one place to another in search of food and partners, and to escape from predators and threats.
• Most multicellular organisms need support because they have soft body tissues.

Three Types of Skeletons

Exoskeleton

• Found in animals such as insects and crabs.
• Supports and protects body organs.
• Enables movement.

Endoskeleton

• Found in humans.
• Maintains body shape.
• Supports soft body tissues.
• Protects internal organs from injury.

Hydrostatic Skeleton

• Found in soft-bodied animals such as earthworms.
• Maintains a rigid body shape.
