Oedema
Definition
- Oedema is swelling caused when tissue fluid that is not returned to the blood accumulates in intercellular spaces.
Causes of Oedema
- Parasitic infection
- Brugia sp. blocks lymphatic vessels and lymph flow.
- The infected part swells; the patient contracts lymphatic filariasis.
- The worm is transmitted by mosquito bites.
- Deficiency in plasma protein
- Deficiency of albumin in the blood.
- Pregnancy
- The body produces more fluid to meet the needs of the growing foetus.
- Prolonged bedridden patients
- Paralysed or stroke patients with limited mobility may develop oedema in the legs.
